1,000 innovations supported through NHS Innovation Service
More than 1,000 innovations have now been assessed and given access to tailored, end-to-end support from expert support organisations through the NHS Innovation Service.
The service is designed to support innovators, and ensure a ready pipeline of ideas that meets the NHS’s biggest challenges, by bringing together 11 partners with the experience, knowledge and expertise in developing and supporting wide-spread adoption of healthcare innovations.
1,000 innovators have now received bespoke advice and practical support since the service launched in July 2022, including more than 150 innovations relating to cardiovascular conditions, 119 which support respiratory conditions, 93 which support women’s health, and 190 which support mental health and behavioural conditions.
The NHS Innovation Service supports innovations at all stages of development, from ideas to prototypes to innovations already deployed in NHS services.
The support includes everything from early-stage advice to commercialisation, evidence generation, procurement and getting registered with the relevant regulatory authorities.
An innovation which has been supported, and is now available on NHS Supply Chain, is the Impella, a heart pump developed by Abiomed, designed to reduce heart failure symptoms in patients and improve heart function.
Max Fowler, Associate Director at J&J MedTech the company behind Abiomed, said:
“The NHS Innovation Service supported us to access the NHS Supply Chain. It will be much easier for new centres to access this life-saving technology for their patients.”
Quadsense, by Eventum, is another innovation the NHS Innovation Service has helped be made available on NHS Supply Chain. A comparative tool that provides information and data in real-time to support knee surgeons, it enables surgeons to make more informed decisions during surgery therefore improving patient outcomes and treatment.
Daye’s Diagnostic Tampon, for HPV screening, is an at-home test that integrates cervical cancer screening into a familiar patient routine, improving early detection rates and reducing the burden on NHS cervical screening services.
Valentina Milanova, Founder of Daye, who is a 2025 fellow on the NHS Innovation Accelerator, said:
"We became involved with Health Innovation Wessex through the NHS Innovation Service, which provided a platform to connect with key stakeholders and NHS resources, as well as to obtain valuable advice on identifying sources of public funding for further longitudinal research. Health Innovation Wessex offered us invaluable support in terms of strategic advice, networking opportunities, and access to industry experts, which were crucial for our growth."
Diagnostics company Werfen contacted the NHS Innovation Service about an innovation that helps reduce the time patients wait for blood test results and are now being supported by the Health Innovation Network.
Bev Straker Bennett, Product Manager Werfen, said:
“We contacted the NHS Innovation Service for some support to have a look at how this could really help with clinical flow patient management in places like A & E units and neonatal units. We’re now looking to trial this clinically in some major hospitals where we can show the benefits.”
Matt Newman, Deputy Director of the Accelerated Access Collaborative, said:
“The NHS Innovation Service supports the most promising innovations to get to clinicians and patients faster. Our ambition is to support the UK as the most pro-innovation health system in the world.
