Clinical area: Respiratory - Platforms for the digital self-management of asthma
Why:
- Lung disease, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma and pneumonia, is the third biggest cause of death in England (after cancer and cardiovascular disease).
- When compared with other developed countries the UK is underperforming. The UK is ranked 35th out of 37 countries for asthma deaths in the 5-to-34-year age range.
- Asthma is the most common lung condition in the UK, affecting 5.4 million people (one in every 12 adults and one in every 11 children). Due to a lack of proper investigation, around 30% of those with a diagnosis of asthma may not actually have the condition, while others are missing out on appropriate treatment.
